I have seen and helped so many people over the years who have experienced anxiety symptoms. It is so common, you are not alone. Hypnosis has a positive impact on lowering anxiety levels, I also work with you to practise and develop coping skills that help you to master anxiety these skills are simple and invaluable and will help you to understand how your mind works, what anxiety is and how you can always help yourself in the future.
Many problems that people experience will often have an anxiety element and although anxiety and stress can be helpful to provide motivation to solve problems and help to keep us alert; too much or a prolonged period of anxiety can cause problems in our lives.
Symptoms
Our minds and bodies are fantastic things and will respond differently to stress and anxiety depending on the individual and life situation.
Here are a few common symptoms:
Feeling worried, negative thinking, feeling tired, unable to concentrate, disorganised, sleeping badly fearful, tearful, irritable, low mood, irregular heartbeats (palpitations), sweating, muscle tension, digestive problems, (IBS), dizziness, fainting, skin problems, headaches, habits: skin picking/nailbiting/smoking drinking
Causes
The body produces stress as an adaptive mechanism to cope with change in our lives and can be useful as it makes us alert and gives us motivation to deal with problems. However anxiety is also the body's natural defence mechanism to escape from dangerous situations and will take over if our mind deems us to be in dangerous situation.
The mind can be seen as consisting of two parts, a conscious mind where rational thinking takes place and day to day decisions are made, and a subconscious mind, that controls and maintains physical functions of the body but can also move in when we are under pressure or in danger with behavioural responses such as anxiety, anger or depression (also known as fight, flight & freeze).
Although we all have an innate tendency to respond to certain situations with these behaviours, sometimes through life events or certain thinking styles, we can learn to inappropriately respond to situations in these ways. For example, it seems appropriate to produce an anxiety response to run away from a wild animal, but as intellectual rational beings, we should be able to deal with most other non-threatening situations without such fear or anxiety.
How?
Research indicates that our ability to problem solve and cope with problems in our lives provides a reassurance that we can make positive changes with our mind and behaviour and be free from inappropriate behaviours or habits. Hypnotherapy can help to effectively reprogram the subconscious mind so we can take control of our lives again.
